At our recent swimming camp, we welcomed participants, including some who are deaf. Nithya Giri , our sign language interpreter, provided interpretation right in the water, fostering an inclusive environment for all swimmers.
I observed that our coach quickly adapted to train participants with diverse requirements, demonstrating that inclusivity in sports is entirely achievable. This adaptability mirrors what I’ve seen in our filmmaking courses, where instructors also embrace diverse learning needs.
Initially, deaf participants relied on the interpreter for guidance, but as the training progressed, they began to engage directly with the coach, even when the interpreter was not present. This evolution highlights that training individuals with diverse needs is not only possible but can lead to greater independence and confidence.
As we continue to break down barriers in swimming, we celebrate the diverse experiences that enrich our community.
